Having downloaded the free Acrobat XI 30 day trial (twice) and spent about half a day trying to understand it, it still does not work! I certainly won't be buying it. How user unfriendly can a bit of software be?

Having downloaded the free Acrobat XI 30 day trial (twice) and spent about half a day trying to understand it, it still does not work! I certainly won't be buying it.  How user unfriendly can a bit of software be? What do I do next?
