In your specific example, if using a Date field, the format is enforced when a user tries to move on to the next field.
You could include Help Text... but that will only help if people click on the ? symbol to learn more. You could also insert descriptive text in your field label, or, you could insert separate Formatted Text fields near those fields you feel need some additional information.
